Beach Access

Beach Access
Having read in the local paper that investigations were taking place to try and find a scheme that would enable disabled people to get access to the sands on Bognor Beach, the sketches I have prepared show different ways of achieving this. I thought the ideal location would be on the east side of The Pier, as in this location it would get the protection of the pier structure from the prevailing south westerly winds. Depending on the necessary permissions it would also be possible to attach the ramps to the structural members of the pier. You could also utilize the walkaway on the pier for part of the access way. Alternatively the ramp could be completely independent but run parallel with the pier. The end of the ramp would be buried in the sand to provide a smooth exit from the ramp. Where there was the possibility of shingle getting onto the ramp perforated panel sections would be fitted to the sides of the ramp to allow water to be discharged but prevent shingle entering the ramp. The closer the exit from the ramp can be sited to the shingle the better it would be for prolonging the time disabled people can remain on the beach, care of course needs to be exercised to avoid shingle preventing access or egress to the ramp.
